Benefiting Solano Land Trust

The Farm Fresh Feast celebrates the local, farm fresh bounty of Solano County and nearby areas. You’ll want to put this inaugural event on your calendar. It is a farm to table dinner featuring local, farm fresh ingredients, local wine, and entertainment. It will be an experience to remember!

San Francisco Executive Chef Lauren Kiino of Cane Rosso will prepare your gourmet, four-course meal using local ingredients. Enjoy live music from the popular Dirty Water Blues Band, carriage rides provided by Access Adventure, and hear from prominent local agriculture experts, including Paul Wenger, President of the California Farm Bureau Federation. There will be a raffle for some great prizes. Enjoy your outdoor dinner by candlelight, in a beautiful walnut orchard at Dixon Ridge Farms, near Winters, California. The farm is certified organic, and farm owner Russ Lester will give you a sneak peek into this 21st century green operation which generates much of its own power from solar and walnut shells. Don’t miss this chance to tour this unique operation. 4:30 pm to 8:00 pm. Directions available on our website.

Individual dinner seats: $95

In December, the Bocuse d’Or USA Foundation announced the 12 semi-finalists for the next team to rep America at the so-called Culinary Olympics. To help raise funds to support the cause, Daniel Patterson—who was invited by Daniel Boulud and Thomas Keller to be on the Bocuse council—will be teaming up with fellow Michelin two-star chef David Kinch for a special one-night dinner engagement extravaganza at Coi. Epic? Yes. The pricetag is steep ($195) but then again, it could be the meal of a lifetime (or maybe an early Valentine’s Day treat). The dinner takes place on Monday, February 8, and reservations—which should go quickly—can be made via Coi at 415-393-9000.

The menu, which will have the two chefs alternating courses:

The chefs have some surprises in store, including several amuse bouches, an intermezzo course, and mignardises. Following are the main courses:Assorted Shellfish with Radish and Apple, Seawater (Kinch)

Beet and Goat Cheese Tart (broken, inverted) (Patterson)
rye, dill

Steelhead Trout with Onion and Marrow “Tears,” Chervil Cream (Kinch)

Winter, Pastoral (Patterson)
young carrots roasted on a bed of hay, radish powder, shaved pecorino

Crispy Chicken and Egg Confit, a Roasted Chicken “Dashi,” Black Truffles (Kinch)

Steamed Chicken Breast (Patterson)
wild mushroom porridge, brown butter, wood sorrel

It’s Almost It (Corbett)
chocolate, oatmeal, orange

Meanwhile, Manresa’s blog spells out where the chicken’s coming from:

To emphasize the Foundation’s commitment to sustainability and great American products, a different American heritage breed will be chosen each year. This year’s dinner series celebrates American heritage breed poultry. Patterson and Kinch’s menu will feature poultry from Soul Food Farm.

We’re honored to be chosen for this dinner.

Berkeley’s Café Rouge (1782 4th St.), whose butcher shop has carried Soul Food Farm eggs for years, is hosting a prix fixe family-style dinner ($50 including wine) on Monday Oct. 5, from 6-9:30pm, to raise funds for Soul Food Farm.

The dinner is shaping up to be an over-the-top fantastic meal, with the best area farms donating the ingredients: vegetables from Full Belly Farms, and meats from Devil’s Gulch Ranch and Red Hill Farms. Cafe Rouge’s Marsha McBride and Rick DeBeaord and Christopher Lee (of the recently closed Eccolo) have created this inspired menu:

Several restaurants like Il Cane Rosso are holding fundraisers, but we also wanted to do something affordable for all the other generous but cash-strapped fans of Soul Food Farm, like the kitchen crews of various restaurants.

Baby chicks at Soul Food Farm

The Soul Food Farm party at Pizzaiolo will feature:

special guests Alexis and Eric Koefoed, Soul Food farmers, and five Soul Food baby chicks that are going to be auctioned off for would-be backyard poultry farmers. (Mixed breeds, including with the Aracanas that lay the green/blue eggs)

free wine & beer donated by Folio, Cakebread, Verge, Kendric Vineyards, Larkmead and others

hors d’ouevre and sweets made by chefs and cooks from Chez Panisse, Pizzaiolo, Lalime’s, Oliveto, Bar Tartine, Bakesale Betty, Ici Ice Cream, and other volunteers using produce donated by Full Belly Farm, meats from Devil’s Gulch Ranch, Becker Lane Pork and Prather Ranch, and cured meats and patés from Fatted Calf and Salumaio Christopher Lee

a live raffle drawing for some really great stuff (see list and buy tickets here)

announcement of the winners of the Soul Food Farm online auction

live Brazilian and folk music by Felipe Ferraz (Guitar, Voice), JoAnne Craig-Ferraz (Voice), Marty Holland (6-String Bass), and Andrew Epstein (Percussion)

Tickets are just $14,* which also gets you one free entry into the raffle drawing (buy more of the $5 tickets here). It’s our way of saying thanks to everyone, while hopefully raising a little more cash to meet the $25K target we need by November to get the farm safely back on its feet. We’re expecting it to sell out fast, so don’t wait too long!

There will be two seatings: the first at 5:30-6 p.m., followed by one at 7:30-8 p.m. The cost of the three-course menu (served family-style), will be $50 per person, including wine but exclusive of tax and gratuity. For reservations, call (415) 391-7599.

All proceeds will go to benefit Soul Food Farm, which is really generous and much appreciated.

About Cane Rosso: Created by partners Patterson and chef Lauren Kiino, with Doug Borkowski as chef, this casual, quick-serve rotisserie and sandwich shop was inspired by the small, family-run food stores of Southern Italy. Both Soul Food Farm eggs and chicken are regularly featured on its menu, as is produce from other Bay Area farms such as Star Route, Dirty Girl, Mariquita and County Line farms and dairy and cheese from Bellwether and Straus.

Wow. I supposedly have a big vocabulary, but that’s the only word I’ve been able to utter, over and over. Ever since news got out that Soul Food Farm was in trouble, the response has just been overwhelming.

Here are the restaurants that have committed to hosting benefits and already settled on dates.

Saturday, Sept. 12: Mission Street Food (2234 Mission St, SF), the guerilla restaurant with the awesome fried chicken and other affordable items, will donate its profits for the night. Soul Food Farm eggs will be on the menu. No tickets necessary, just show up and eat! (Thanks, Anthony!)

Monday, Sept. 28: Monday Night Dinner at Sebo (517 Hayes Street, SF). Chef Melissa Perello (of the soon-to-open Frances) is raising her prices a tad for one of her special seasonal dinners to raise money for Soul Food. To reserve a spot, email monday_night@me.com. Please do not call Sebo directly. Reservations will be accepted via email only and on a first-come first-serve basis. (Thanks Melissa!)

Monday, October 5, 6-9:30 p.m.: Cafe Rouge (1782 4th St., Berkeley), whose butcher shop has long carried Soul Food Farm eggs, is working with Slow Food Berkeley to host a benefit dinner. Several guest chefs will each prepare a dish. Tickets will be $50 and are available via Brown Paper Tickets. (Merci Arthur and Marsha!)

Sunday, October 11: Party at Pizzaiolo! (5008 Telegraph Ave, Oakland, CA) Chef Charlie Hallowell just said yes today to letting us throw an informal reception on Pizzaiolo’s “day off,” where we’ll serve hors d’oeuvres, donated wine & beer, and hold the raffle and silent auction. (Grazie mille di cuore, Charlie!) Tickets will be $10 and include one raffle entry. More details to come; tickets will be sold via Brown Paper Tickets and I’ll post link here — please don’t call Pizzaiolo. Post on its way about the super-cool raffle and auction items we’ve already got in the kitty.

I’ve heard rumblings that Coi and Chez Panisse are also planning dinners; will post details when I have them.

Many many thanks not just to the chefs but to the staffs of these restaurants.
